THE PROGRAMME

The CFP Labeling system in Korea, by Ministry of Environment, was launched in February 2009. Korea Environmental Industry and Technology Institute (KEITI) which is an affiliate organization of Ministry of Environment has operated the CFP Labeling system.

The CFP labeling certificate is issued when all GHG emissions is calculated in the entire life cycle of a product including manufacturing, transport, distribution, use and disposal. And it is attached to a product to show the carbon footprint of the product.

CFP Labeling system consists of two steps, first carbon footprint certificate and second low-carbon product certificate.

Step 1 – Carbon footprint certificate is issued to a product, when all GHG emissions is calculated in the entire life cycle of product. The life cycle means ‘cradle to grave’ and includes raw material acquisition, manufacturing, transport, distribution, use and disposal.

Step 2- Low carbon product certificate is given to products with step 1 (Carbon footprint) certificate, if the product’s GHG emissions is reduced and less than average emissions of products in the same category, or when the product reaches the GHG emission reduction target, 4.24%.

2438 products of 285 companies are certified by the end of 2017. Korea’s carbon footprint has grown faster than CFP labeling in any other Asian countries.

THE ADVANTAGES CONNECTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF CFP IN KOREA

In order to promote CFP Labeling, Korea provides various incentives for label certification.

First, if you use CFP-labeled materials for building, you can get extra points for green building certification. In Korea, it is obligatory to get green building certification for new and remodeling buildings. If you use low carbon labeled materials for building, you can get up to 6 points for green building certification.

Secondly, consumers collect eco-money points when purchasing CFP-labeled products with green credit cards. It promotes sales of carbon footprint products and encourages low-carbon, eco-friendly life.

You also can get extra benefit for environmental value at Korea’s public procurement service evaluation. And you can submit a carbon footprint certificates as the base data for carbon emission amount.

If you use CFP-labeled products, you are recommended to government and public organizations’ reward system on climate change. And you are provided with free useful educations on climate change and greenhouse gases.
